How Matthews is laid out
Think of Matthews in three rings. The historic core around Trade Street and John Street holds the older homes, civic buildings and the farmers' market. Around it, neighborhoods built from the 1970s through the 2000s fill the land between Independence Boulevard (US 74), Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Sardis Road and Weddington Road. Beyond the town limits, the Matthews mailing area continues into Union County and neighboring towns, where much of the newer and larger-lot construction sits.
Getting around
US 74 and I-485 connect Matthews to uptown Charlotte and the rest of the region, and Charlotte Area Transit System bus routes serve parts of town. Traffic on these corridors varies a great deal by hour, so test the routes you would actually drive before choosing a neighborhood.
